Despite its location just 100km south of Hanoi, Ninh Binh province offers a wealth of fresh air and open space, something rarely found in Vietnam’s capital. This vast, green playground opens up to visitors on our full-day Ninh Binh tour with Hang Mua Peak, one of our Hanoi day trips offering a complete day of activity in what is often referred to as ‘Halong Bay on Land’.
The reason behind this nickname can be seen with one look at Ninh Binh’s sky-scraping mountains, dressed in green trees that matches the colour of the region's stretching rice fields. On a river cruise in Tam Coc village, we get close to the nature soaring up around us, while also being able to view it from above at the peak of Hang Mua – the Lying Dragon Mountain. In between these two activities, you will have the chance to pick your next, from either an exploration of Ninh Binh's ancient religious architecture or a slow cycle through the humble nature on the show.
This private day tour of Ninh Binh is heightened by the inclusion of a wonderful guide, who will offer another side to the province by explaining its history and the geology behind its awe-inspiring nature.
Activities: Head to Ninh Binh province for a river cruise in Tam Coc and a climb to Hang Mua Peak, with the option of a visit to Bich Dong Pagoda or cycle around the village in between.
At about 8:00 am, the driver and guide of Vietnam Escape Tours will arrive at your hotel to introduce themselves and welcome you into your private vehicle. We take the 2-hour trip south to the luxuriant Ninh Binh province from here, passing idyllic farming scenes and many instances of Vietnam’s untamed greenery.
Your Ninh Binh day tour starts in a tranquil manner in the village of Tam Coc. Here, we will board a local wooden boat and cruise slowly down the Ngo Dong River, with a local rower as our guide and a source of amazement when they row with their feet. On our 1.5-hour cruise, we see the best of Ninh Binh all around us, where trees sprout out of limestone mountains and gold and green rice paddies lie in their shadows. We continue onwards, gliding across calm water and through enchanting caves, eventually turning around to head back to the center of Tam Coc.
Around 1:00 pm, we disembark here and proceed straight to lunch at a nearby restaurant. This will be a highly local affair with many elements of delicious north Vietnamese cuisine. During lunch, we will have a discussion about the next destination on our Ninh Binh full-day tour, which can be either of the following:
Option 1: Bich Dong Pagoda
At the back of Tam Coc, the outstanding Bich Dong Pagoda provides the village’s history and its beautiful architecture, found beside a limestone mountain next to a lotus pond. We cross the quaint stone bridge over the pond and head through the beautiful gate at the front of Bich Dong, which offers access to the stone steps rising up the rock wall of the mountain. We find well-preserved religious buildings in the mountain’s cave and proceed through to the peak, where the top of the steps provides a great view of Ninh Binh’s lush agriculture rolling out in front.
Option 2: Cycling through Tam Coc
Spend the next 30 – 45 minutes cycling through the village of Tam Coc and its surrounding area. This is where the views of Ninh Binh’s nature are at their most fabulous, revealed slowly from Tam Coc’s quiet country roads that cut in between the scenes on display. Along these paths, we find huge fields of beautiful rice and dramatic mountain ranges in the distance, along with images of farmers in conical hats working hard in the heat of the day.
After one of these two options, we will drive to the final destination on our full-day trip to Ninh Binh and Hang Mua. Once arrived, we are greeted by the sight of 500 stone steps snaking upwards to the peak of the mountain, crowned by a small pavilion and a statue of a winding dragon. We make our way up the stairs, soaking up the aerial views of Ninh Binh on the way, before reaching the top and catching our breath with the best view of the province stretching out ahead of us. We have some time here to take pictures of the rippling mountain ranges that border the river and its neighboring rice paddies, after which we will return to the base of the mountain and climb into the car.
We begin our return to Hanoi at this point across the ancient Red River Delta, arriving in the capital at about 6:00 pm and ending your Ninh Binh day trip with Hang Mua Peak at your hotel.
This is where the tour will end and we will say goodbye. We are very happy to have had you with us during our exploration of Ninh Binh; we hope that we can show you more beautiful Vietnam in the future!
