About 10,000km separates South Africa from Vietnam, but that hasn’t stopped thousands of South African tourist arrivals per year to our beautiful country. There is an awful lot to discover in Vietnam for South Africans, including a unique culture, exquisite food and vast areas of intense natural beauty. Vietnam Escape Tours’ tour package from South Africa will show our South African guests a completely different take on the perfect holiday.
Please note that the following tours do not feature airfare from South Africa to Vietnam or vice versa.
The culture and landscape of Vietnam is always an attraction for South African tourists, who come to our country in a bid to swap the savannah for limestone mountains, beaches, caves and vast plains of rice paddies.
The differences in culture between Vietnam and South Africa are never more pronounced than they are in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam and the holder of most of Vietnam’s beautiful traditions and architecture. The history of the city stretches back a staggering 5,000 years, and in that time it has grown a gorgeous culture of strong traditions from several influences including Chinese, French and American. This is a great chance for those on a Vietnam package holiday from South Africa to try some of the incredible street food that we serve on a daily basis, the most famous dishes of which have made it across the world, including to South Africa.
At three times the height of Table Mountain, Fansipan Mountain bestows much grace to both the hill region of Sapa and to Vietnam as a whole. Views from the top stretch out over Sapa and beyond, revealing the jagged teeth of tree-topped mountain ranges that hug the border with China. The naturally endowed region provides some of the best scenery in the country and presents its greatest hiking opportunities, with single-day or multi-day treks around rice terraces, into valleys and through ethnic villages of culturally diverse hill tribes.
South Africa can boast a wealth of beautiful ports along its lengthy coastline, but the 1,550km2 area of Halong Bay constitutes a different take on beauty entirely. Daytrips, 2-day cruises and 3-day cruises reveal the beauty of Halong Bay from the comfort of a highly modern cruise ship with ancient aesthetics in wooden decks and billowing sails above. Many of our Vietnam tour packages from South Africa feature a stop at Halong Bay, as a Vietnam itinerary without the inclusion of its number 1 tourist destination would feel like something is sorely missing.
The best of tropical Vietnam is on display at the Mekong Delta, located just south of Ho Chi Minh City and representing the deepest south of the country. Here is where our South African visitors will find incredibly lush scenery in the form of swaying palm trees, expansive orchards and canals flanked by exotic nipa palm. A wealth of human and birdlife live from the abundant produce of the Mekong Delta, and the activity can still be seen at its peak today, at the Cai Be and Cai Rang floating markets that take place daily here.
South African visitors will need a visa to enter Vietnam, obtainable for up to 3 months and with single or multiple entries to the country during that time. The standard visa that most guests get is a 1 month single entry visa, but your circumstances may change depending on your travel plans. You can apply for your visa in one of two ways:
Apply with Vietnam Escape Tours – In terms of an online application, which is by far the most convenient, any guests of our Vietnam package holidays for South Africans can request the visa services of Vietnam Escape Tours. For a standardised fee, we will arrange your application form and approval letter for you, which you need to take to the Vietnamese airport upon your arrival.
Apply at the Embassy – The local South African embassy for Vietnam in Pretoria is able to bestow visas for citizens via an appointment. After the application form is filled out and passport handed in, you will receive your documents back with visa attached in the post.
You can potentially pay for hotel, tour or big chain restaurant services with U.S dollars, but the vast majority of the country works on local currency alone. It is incredibly hard to get the local currency, Vietnamese dong, outside of Vietnam. We recommend bringing U.S dollars and exchanging it to Vietnamese dong while in the country. Alternatively, load a travel card with dollars and you will be able to draw the equivalent in dong from Vietnamese ATMs
Vietnam’s tourism potential has a long way to go before it reaches its peak. Because of this, it lingers behind Thailand, Bali and other such large hubs in terms of English ability. If joining a Vietnam tour package for South Africans, then you won’t need to worry much about the language as all of the accommodation, transport and much of the food is arranged for you. However, there may be some translation problems during any designated free time on your tour, so it would be beneficial for you and highly appreciated by the locals if you learn a few basic phrases before you arrive.
The street food of Vietnam is one of the country’s biggest pulls when it comes to attracting tourists from South Africa and beyond. Vietnam has had a long history of street food and healthy eating, and tourists can discover that for themselves here. The street food is most certainly safe to try and many foreigners live off street food for their entire holiday without issue. We advise you to take the same amount of precaution as you would with any other type of food you may try.
