In general Vietnam is very safe for travelers from United States or any country in the world, with low rates of violent crime. However, keep an eye on your belongings in crowded areas like bus stations, train stations and in the walking streets to avoid pickpocketing.
Be cautious when crossing busy streets—traffic can be chaotic. Walk slowly and consistently so drivers can predict your movement. Learn from your tour guide some tips for crossing the road or you can go with local guide if possible.
Dress modestly when visiting temples or pagodas (cover shoulders and knees). Please note that in some temples and holy places wearing shorts is not allowed to enter.
