On the outskirts of Hanoi, there are many enclaves that stand frozen in time; sanctuaries for the ancient and traditional in the shadow of an increasingly modernized city. The Duong Lam Ancient Village Tour From Hanoi shows you the contrast between the capital and its suburbs, where steel skyscrapers give way to redbrick cottages and the rush of the traffic yields to the plod of the buffalo.
Culture and tradition are steeped high in the western outskirts of Hanoi, found best at Son Tay’s ancient citadel and the laterite architecture of Duong Lam village. This day trip from Hanoi takes its guests back in time, through visits to sites of historical intrigue and national reverence. We walk and cycle between enchanting buildings that represent the determination of Duong Lam’s residents to keep their special and truly unique identity alive.
Activities: Visit Son Tay Ancient Citadel before moving on towards Duong Lam, discovering the village’s traditions at the Mong Phu Temple, Mia Pagoda, communal houses and its charming streets.
The driver and guide will meet you at your hotel lobby at 08:00 am, after which we will take the scenic drive west of Hanoi to find Son Tay Ancient Citadel. The first stop of our Duong Lam village day trip is steeped in history, as this was the residence of Emperor Ming Manh, one of the most brutal of Vietnam’s rulers. The citadel was built in 1822 and is a great example of typically grand royal architecture, found across its redbrick flag tower and its front gate covered in snaking jungle vines.
Following our explorations here, we make our way northwards to Duong Lam ancient village and delve straight into the wells of traditional beauty on offer. We pass through the original village gate and tread along narrow alleys coated in old-time charm, found between red laterite buildings with picturesque fading across their walls.
Our first destination in Mong Phu Temple, dedicated to the lives of Phung Hung and Ngo Quyen, two important leaders in Vietnam’s history that were born into the long-held traditions of Duong Lam. The elongated buffalo-horn roof and ornately decorated front gate provide the more grandiose encapsulations of the village’s man-made splendour.
We have a local lunch at this point, with enchanting views of Duong Lam’s ancient architecture surrounding us. We jump onto bicycles after this, heading leisurely down village paths and arriving at the highly unique bell tower of Mia Pagoda, in order to admire the stand-out exterior architecture and 287 statues found within.
The locals here are accustomed to welcoming guests on day trips to Duong Lam ancient village from Hanoi and will be eager to invite us into their gorgeous homes to share their ancestors’ stories. Over tea and green bean cake, we learn of fascinating local and overall Vietnamese history from the people who know it best.
After this, we drive back to Hanoi, where we will drop you off at your hotel at about 4:00 pm.
We thank you for joining us on the Hanoi to Duong Lam village day trip. We hope you learned a lot and gained a new appreciation for some of the local traditions in Vietnam!
