Despite the expansion of modern Hanoi, traditions in its center and suburban areas remain proud and strong. On the Bat Trang Ceramic and Dong Ho Villages Tour, we will discover two ancient handicraft villages, both celebrated nationwide for the fabulous works of art that they continue to create to this day.
Both the ceramic works of Bat Trang and the woodblock paintings of Dong Ho have graced royal palaces throughout their history, shining a spotlight on these culture-heavy trades that have been revered for centuries. On this day tour from Hanoi, we visit both of these villages and speak to the locals about their intensely Vietnamese traditions, while also taking the time to shop for some of the most unique and genuine souvenirs available in Vietnam.
Activities: Visit Bat Trang village and Dong Ho village to discover their local crafts, with lunch and an extra trip to But Thap Pagoda included.
At 08:00 am, our guide will pick you up from your hotel and begin your Bat Trang and Dong Ho day tour with the transfer to Hanoi’s eastern suburbs, where we find the ceramic center of northern Vietnam - Bat Trang.
We spend the next two hours in the village, discovering the local love of pottery and the unlimited variations that are birthed in the hands of skilled artisans. We will see rows of local houses where both small and incredibly large pieces of ceramic pottery are made, along with a walk around the markets to find genuine products at very low prices. Before we leave, we will offer the opportunity to try firing your own pottery through a lesson with a local, which is available for a small, additional cost.
At around 12:00 pm, we sit down for lunch in Bat Trang while watching the beautifully simple scenes on display outside.
Following this, we travel to the Duong River on the way to our next destination, Dong Ho painting village. This is a stunning enclave housing a very ancient tradition, which has reached the peak of its popularity in the Imperial Palace of Hue. Highly skilled artists keep this long-held culture alive by painting colorful works of art for businesses and collectors around the country, which we will see on a walk through the village. The guide will help us to translate as we talk to the locals about their proud line of work, as well as the possibility of buying unique masterpieces directly from the artist.
We start our return to Hanoi, stopping at the magnificent But Thap Pagoda, a beautiful piece of architecture near to the Duong River. The stone tiered pagoda and bull-horned roofs are typical of 13th-century Buddhist architecture, as are the impressive carved wooden statues found within.
At about 5:00 pm, we arrive back in the Hanoi Old Quarter and end the Bat Trang and Dong Ho Village Day trip from Hanoi at your hotel.
Thank you for joining us for this Vietnam Group tour. We wish you all the best for your future endeavors around Vietnam!
