Activities: Land in Hanoi and take the transfer from the airport.

Welcome to Hanoi, the colourful capital of Vietnam. Find our driver with your name card at the airport and take the drive to the centre of the city.

After you have checked into your hotel, feel free to explore Hanoi at your will. In your free time you may want to enjoy a Water Puppet Show. This is a highly traditional form of entertainment in Vietnam, originating from the time just after the harvest in rural communities when the water-filled paddy would provide the perfect stage.

Or you just walk around the Old Quarter for discovering Hanoi on your own way.

 Meals:  Dinner

 Notes:
Check-in is available from any time after 14:00. If your flight arrives after the water puppet show starts, then we will go the following day.

Activities: Take a full-day tour of Hanoi, heading through some of the city’s famous sites.

Have breakfast in your hotel and wait for the guide to arrive. Your Hanoi City Tour will start with a drive to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum in the historic district of Ba Dinh. Here, we visit some of the sites that honour Ho Chi Minh, the Vietnamese leader throughout the First Indochina War and much of the American War. There are many places of interest to visit here, including the mausoleum housing his body, a museum dedicated to his life and his former stilt-house, where he lived his humble later life.

We will also make a brief stop at the iconic One-Pillar Pagoda before moving on to one of four museums. You will have a choice between the Vietnam Ethnology Museum, Hoa Lo Prison, the Fine Arts Museum and Vietnam Military History Museum – each of which focuses on one aspect of Vietnam’s history or current culture.

Lunch at a local restaurant will follow this before we head back towards the geographic centre of the city. Here we will find the Temple of Literature, Vietnam’s first university, dating from 1070. This is a verdant space with a temple attached, which taught the philosophies of Confucius to those smart enough to pass the incredibly tough entrance exam.

We end the tour in Hanoi Old Quarter with a stroll around, finding many examples of Hanoi’s past influence in the architecture and layout. We walk down the hidden alleys and the wide avenues, finding beauty at every turn and stopping to take photos in this highly picturesque city. The tour ends at your hotel.

 Meals:  Breakfast, Lunch

 Notes:
Between September and November, the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is closed for annual maintenance. If this is the case during your tour, we will admire its architecture from outside.

Activities: Head to Ninh Binh Province to explore Hoa Lu and Tam Coc on a day trip before returning to Hanoi for a food tour.

Have another delicious breakfast at your hotel before the guide arrives to take you down to Ninh Binh province. This passes many fantastic sights of the Red River Delta en route, such as green rice paddies and their background of perfect mountains.

We arrive first at Hoa Lu, located in the north of Ninh Binh. This small locale was one of the early capitals of Dai Co Viet, the preferred name of the country during Hoa Lu’s rule in the 10th and early 11th centuries. We visit the temples of the two former kings here; Emperor Dinh and Emperor Le, who are both immortalised in wonderfully ornate architecture.

After this, we have lunch in Tam Coc Village before moving to the centre of the city, where we will find an array of sampan boats awaiting our boarding. We will board one and take a 90-minute ride down the river, watching the beauty of limestone mountains, rice paddies and wet caves drift by us on every side.

We return to Hanoi. End of the day tour to Hoa Lu Tam Coc.

Activities: Explore Halong Bay via a cruise ship on the first day of a 2-day tour.

Please Note: There are many itineraries to choose from in Halong Bay, the one below is just an example. Morning

Savour breakfast in the hotel and prepare for your Halong Bay 2-day, 1-night tour, which will start when the driver arrives outside the lobby. After the drive to the far east of the country, we will board the cruise ship and head out into the wonderful world of karst rocks ahead of us.

Afternoon

We have lunch in the afternoon and cruise leisurely through Halong Bay, marvelling at the imposing mountains rising high above us. After a few hours of relaxation, we head to the first of our stops, Cua Van Fishing Village. Here, we can kayak or take a sampan boat rowed by a local to discover the colourful world within, where residents have lived on floating boards in the sea for thousands of years.

Next, we head to Ban Chan beach, where we will be able to relax on golden sands with a view of the blue ocean in front of us. The crescent moon-shaped beach is flanked by limestone towers and casuarina pines, making it difficult to find and a real quiet gem in Halong Bay.

Evening

Returning to the cruise, we head to the top deck, where a sunset party will be showing the most amazing spectacle in the daily routine of Halong Bay. Soak up the magical atmosphere before dinner, which will be served in the glistening dining room before an evening of relaxation under the stars.

 Meals:  Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Dau Go Cave is a wonderful example of limestone erosion over tens of thousands of years, which have caused wide caverns housing incredible rock formations. We learn about the geology of these formations, while also learning of the vital history that the cave played in its defence of Vietnam during an attempted Mongol invasion.

We return to the cruise ship for a final brunch and some time on board watching the gorgeous scenery flit past. At the harbour, we disembark and climb into the bus that will take us back to Hanoi.
