Coffee has long been a familiar drink of Vietnamese people and gradually coffee has become the culture and lifestyle of Vietnamese people. As a Vietnamese, especially a Hanoian or a coffee lover, you are probably no stranger to Vietnamese egg coffee. Originally processed and originated in Hanoi, egg coffee seems to be famous all over the world, attracting many tourists to enjoy it. If you are on a trip to Nothern Vietnam, try this rich, decadent dessert-like coffee.
Vietnamese Egg Coffee is Cà Phê Trứng in Vietnamese, is a thickly brewed Vietnamese coffee that resembles a custardy dessert, topped with a sweet, creamy, silky foam made of sweetened condensed milk and egg yolk. It almost has the same flavor as tiramisu in a mug.

Vietnamese Egg Coffee
Egg coffee originated in the 1950s in Hanoi. This beverage is known to have originated at The Giang Cafe in Hanoi. It’s said that Nguyen Giang developed the recipe for this egg coffee by replacing milk with egg yolk because milk was scarce in Vietnam in the 1940s due to the French War.
3 simple ingredients
This fantastic Vietnamese egg coffee only requires three basic ingredients.
VIETNAMESE COFFEE: Vietnamese coffee is strong and bitter, appropriate to be made egg coffee. It is typically brewed through a special filter, giving it its rich, flavorful, and strong flavor. Look for a strong-brewed dark roast coffee or espresso if you're not do not have traditional Vietnamese coffee. The sweet, creamy topping of this beverage needs to be counterbalanced by a robust, hearty cup of coffee.
SWEETENED CONDENSED MILK: Vietnamese coffee is traditionally brewed with sweetened condensed milk as an essential ingredient. The rich, potent coffee is countered by the creamy sweetness.
EGG YOLKS: This recipe uses raw eggs. Eating raw or undercooked eggs may increase your risk of contracting a foodborne illness. Make sure you are using pasteurized eggs if you want to feel more comfortable using raw eggs in recipes. Pasteurized eggs are safe to use in recipes that call for raw or only partially cooked eggs because they have been gently heated in their shells to kill any potentially harmful bacteria.
We can make Vietnamese egg coffee at home through these 3 main steps:
The first step is brewing strong coffee
To make a genuine cup of Vietnamese coffee, use a Vietnamese Coffee Phin. Add 2 tablespoons of fine coffee grounds (assume espresso) to a phin for a single serving, then top with the flat filter press. Place the entire phin on top of your mug and start to slowly pour 1 ounce of 95°C (205°F) water over it. Pour water into the phin until it is filled with 4 ounces after pausing to let the coffee bloom (open up). Allow it to completely drip into the mug. In order to keep it warm, egg coffee is typically served in a mug in a bowl of hot water. If you still need to prepare your egg mixture and keep your coffee hot, do it now.
The second step is the EGG MIXTURE
Making the egg cream while the coffee is brewing is ideal because everything will generally be ready at the same time (depending on how you brew your coffee, of course). In a small mixing bowl, combine the egg yolks and sweetened condensed milk. Then, combine them with a hand mixer's whisk attachment to create a light, creamy mixture. After five minutes, it won't have a foamy-foamy texture like when milk is frothed; instead, it will be ribbony and silky.
The last step is assembling THE COFFEE
On top of the just-brewed coffee, pour the sweet egg cream mixture. A layer will be added on top for an attractive presentation. Add some cocoa powder or freshly chopped chocolate as a garnish.

Egg Coffee ingredients
The best way to enjoy egg coffee in style and taste is when drinking, you should tilt the cup so that you can drink both coffee and egg cream. The smell of coffee and the fatty taste of egg cream will make you fall in love. Note that hot egg coffee will keep the true taste of Hanoi, so if your coffee has been cold for a long time, you should put it in the microwave again to heat up the coffee. You can immerse the coffee cup in a bowl of hot water to prolong the enjoyment of this egg coffee. This helps keep the coffee warm and the eggs don't get cold.
You should only make egg coffee by adding egg cream to coffee when you can immediately enjoy it, otherwise you should store your mug of coffee in the fridge for preservation. It is better to enjoy your mug of coffee on the same day.
