Visitors from 80 countries and territories, including the United States, Canada, India, Denmark, Iceland, and Australia, are currently eligible for a one-month single-entry e-visa from Vietnam.
In the proposal, the ministry also recommended making the 15-day visa exemption period 30 days for visitors from those nations.
Currently, travelers from various European nations, Japan, and South Korea—three of Vietnam's main tourist markets—are only allowed to stay for a maximum of 15 days without obtaining for a tourist visa.
According to the government, the number of international visitors has remained low since Vietnam reopened its borders in March of last year, leading insiders in the tourism sector to call for visa relaxations to save the sector.
In order to hasten the recovery of tourism, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh announced on 15 March that Vietnam would waive for more nations and lengthen the stay of international visitors. That will attract more and tourists visiting Vietnam especially for the western countries who often visit Vietnam for a long trip.
Vietnam received only 3.6 million foreign visitors despite being one of the first countries in Southeast Asia to fully reopen to foreign tourism under Covid. In 2023, Vietnam aims to receive 8 million foreign visitors.
