Let’s discover Cho Lon Chinatown Ho Chi Minh City with Vietnam Escape Tours!

The history

Before 1698, in De Ngan (later called Cho Lon) there was Minh Huong village of the Chinese (because they did not follow the Qing Dynasty, they left China to settle in Dang Trong, Vietnam). As a result, Saigon and Cho Lon were two distinct cities prior to the French colonial era. Cho Lon area used to be called Saigon market street, and today's Saigon area (District 1) was called Ben Nghe. The two were separated by a suburb in the middle.

Later, the French took the name Saigon and attached it to the urban area in Ben Nghe (District 1). The name Cho Lon probably comes from comparing the larger Chinese market with other Vietnamese markets such as Tan Kieng market (Quan market).

The two cities were combined into a one administrative entity called Saigon-Cho Lon by proclamation of the then-president of France in 1931. The name Cho Lon no longer exists in administrative terms, but becomes an experiential cultural area in districts 5, 6 and 11.

The life of Chinese people nowadays

The cultural, architectural, and religious values of the Cho Lon area are still present today. Particularly, it appears that the temple, the assembly hall, and the roofs covered in dark pipes covered in moss have escaped the effects of time. Restaurants, hotels, and commercial streets bearing the identity of hundred-year-old overseas Chinese still exist.

In addition, referring to Chinatown, it would be remiss not to talk about diverse and culturally rich cuisine such as Dan Ich hot pot with a variety of homemade dipping sauces that have the aroma of time, Yangzhou fried rice, bowl cake, Sichuan tofu, roasted pork, or chicken nuggets...

Chinese people nowadays are still making efforts in preserving their hometown’s culture and language. Many people living in Cho Lon Chinese Town still use Chinese in daily conversation with parents and siblings so as not to forget their mother tongue. They still maintain traditions and customs on big holidays. For example, in the Lunar New Year, they will prepare fireworks, Chinese medicine, best wishes to give each other,...or in the Middle Autumn Festival, they never forget to prepare a five-fruit tray, baked mooncakes, and incense.

The role of Cho Lon Chinatown Ho Chi Minh

The current Cho Lon area, despite many changes, is still one of the prosperous trading centers of not only the Chinese but also the Vietnamese, and at the same time it is also an indispensable economic center. One of the most dynamic cities in Southeast Asia is Ho Chi Minh City.

The cultural, architectural, and religious values of Cho Lon from many centuries ago are still present today. With this place it seems that the destructive power of time slows down a lot. Some economic experts said that the legacy of Cho Lon can nurture tourism culture and bring revenue to Ho Chi Minh City similar to the way Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore develop Chinatowns.
