As the summer begins, everybody starts planning a summer getaway after a long time of hard-working. And of course, one of the best places to spend the summer is on the beach surrounded by the ocean. This summer, you may feel a little more special because a new cable car was opened allowing you to observe the amazing seascape from above. This Cat Ba Cable Car is classified as the world’s longest cable car and is not anywhere faraway but right in Hai Phong City in the north of Vietnam.

Cat Ba Island is located on the southern of Halong Bay and it is only a 1-hour drive from Hai Phong city center. Cat Ba Archipelago was recognized as a Man and Biosphere Reserve Area by UNESCO in 2004 to protect the ecosystems, plant and animal life on the Island.
At the heart of Cat Ba Island lies an ecologically diverse national park which is home to a large number of endangered animals such as langurs. Besides, the island also lies near Lan Ha Bay – one of the most attractive destinations known for its pristine beauty.
Cat Ba Island has been known as a must-go attraction for tourists coming to Northern Vietnam. From now, apart from engaging in activities like boat sailing, swimming, kayaking, travelers can now embark on a new adventure with Cat Ba Cable Car. It is a great way to travel to Cat Ba instead of taking the ferry or speed boat like before.
Cat Ba Island
Sun Group – one of the pioneers in the leisure travel industry is the owner of Cat Ba Cable Car. They are a big corporation in Vietnam with outstanding constructions recognized by experts worldwide. All projects belong to Sun Group achieved resounding success and help the tourism in Vietnam develop better. Some of their most famous constructions in different tourist attractions are the Fansipan Legend Cable Car in Sapa, Ba Na Hills in Da Nang, The Sun World Halong Complex in Halong City, etc. Therefore, they decided to invest in a new project in the Gulf of Tonkin – Halong Bay hoping that it will help attract more tourists to the destination. The project began in 2017 with the involvement of one of the best engineers from Doppelmayr & Garaventa. This group of engineers collaborated with Sun Group before with the Fansipan Legend project and they have many experiences with building cable cars around the world.
The Cat Ba Cable Car system is estimated to be 21.9 km long including 5 stations located along the route from Cat Hai Town to Cat Ba Island. When the project is completed, Cat Ba Cable Car will hold the title the longest sea cable car in the world. The length of Cat Ba Cable Car triples that of Tianmen Mountain Cable in China – the longest cable car in the world up to now. Besides, it will also be the world’s highest track rope above sea level, which is about 214.8 meters high.
The construction of Cat Ba Cable Car is divided into 3 phases and their expert team is trying to make sure it is completed on time. The first phase is the construction of Cat Hai – Phu Long Station which will go into operation on May 30th. It is 3,955 meters long and included 60 cabins. The carriage capability of this cableway is up to 4,5000 passengers per hour and it will take only 8 minutes to travel from Cat Hai Station.
The rest of the project is expected to complete by the beginning of 2021 and upon completion, the Cat Ba Cable Car will be capable of carrying 5,500 passengers per hour.
From the Cable Car, tourists will have the opportunity to observe the breathtaking view of the ocean and the amazing limestone mountains. It will create a fascinating experience for travelers, not to mention the time-saving and convenience advantage.

+ For the route Cat Hai – Phu Long Station: 150.000 VND (USD 6.50)/adult; 120.000 VND (USD 5.20)/child
+ For the route Cat Hai – Cat Ba: 700.000 VND/adult
To buy tickets for the route Cat Hai – Phu Long Station, tourists can take a bus from Hanoi to Cat Hai ticket station nearby Got Harbor (which is also where the cruises in Lan Ha Bay start). After buying the ticket, you take the cable car to transfer to Phu Long Station (nearby Cai Vieng Harbor). From there, tourists can take a car or electric car to transfer to the center of Cat Ba Island.

The best time to take the Cat Ba Cable Car is in summer or from April to October because the weather in this period is more comfortable and pleasant. You can take the cable car to go to Cat Ba Island and have fun at the entertainment complex or relax at the resorts on the island. This is the best time for the activities on the beach or sightseeing. However, if you enjoy the cold and want to experience the peaceful atmosphere of Cat Ba, you may travel from November to March. It will also be an exciting experience.
Traveling in the morning, you can see the magical beauty of Cat Ba Island. With the clear sky, you will feel like touching in the clouds while sitting in the cabin.
If you take the cable car at night, you will see the night beauty of Cat Ba Town. The town will appear before your eyes with shimmering lights and a romantic sky.
